When an upgrade is worth it
If pressure is low at every fixture, or you are planning a basement apartment, a larger private-side service is often the missing piece. We confirm the private-side path and whether the city connection also needs work.
Lead and galvanized lines are worth replacing even when they still hold pressure. The upgrade is the chance to put in the right diameter once. Doing a cheap same-size swap and then upsizing later means digging twice.

Choosing ¾-inch versus 1-inch
A typical single-family house with a normal fixture count often does well on a sound ¾-inch line. A house with a basement suite, a long run, or many bathrooms is a candidate for 1-inch. We count fixtures and look at the city connection instead of selling the largest pipe by default.
Published private-side bands: ¾-inch up to 30 feet $2,500–$3,800; ¾-inch 30–45 feet $3,600–$5,200; 1-inch up to 30 feet $3,500–$4,600; 1-inch 30–45 feet $4,500–$5,800. Over 45 feet needs a site visit.
How the upgrade is done
We locate the private-side path, choose trenchless or open excavation, and install the new pipe. Trenchless limits lawn damage when the old line can guide the new one. Tight lots in the old city often go that way. If the path is blocked, we open the ground and restore it.
You get a written estimate. The city-side portion, if it must be enlarged too, is a municipal conversation. We will not bury that in a private-side quote.
After the new service is in
Pressure should feel even across fixtures. If one tap is still weak, that is a local cartridge or a clogged aerator — not a reason to open the lawn again. Flush the system after a lead or galvanized replacement and consider a water test if lead was present.

Upgrades for suites and additions
A legal basement apartment is the most common reason we upsize a service that still holds pressure. Two households on a ½-inch lead line will fight over the shower every morning. The city may also require a larger connection when you add fixtures. We will tell you what we can see on the private side and what you should ask the building department.
Do the upgrade before the drywall goes on the new suite. Opening the lawn after tenants move in is possible. It is not pleasant. If the existing line is already leaking, combine the upgrade with the replacement so the ground is opened once.
